Adoption is a process whereby a person assumes the parenting for another who is not kin and, in so doing, permanently transfers all rights and responsibilities from the original parent or parents. Unlike guardianship or other systems designed for the care of the young, adoption is intended to effect a permanent change in status and as such requires societal recognition, either through legal or religious sanction. Historically some societies have enacted specific laws governing adoption whereas others have endeavored to achieve adoption through less formal means, notably via contracts that specified inheritance rights and parental responsibilities. Modern systems of adoption, arising in the 20th century, tend to be governed by comprehensive statutes and regulations.

Adoption has a long history in the Western world, closely tied with the legacy of the Roman Empire and the Catholic Church. Its use has changed considerably over the centuries with its focus shifting from adult adoption and inheritance issues toward children and family creation and its structure moving from a recognition of continuity between the adopted and kin toward allowing relationships of lessened intensity.

A. Saints can certainly be affectionate. I've had them sit in my lap! While the dogs aren't free, you save a ton of money as everything is included in the adoption price that you would need to pay for with a "free" dog, but at a much lower cost. So, essentially a shelter pet is cheaper than a "free to good home" dog. Also, by supporting rescue, you aren't supporting a backyard breeder or puppy mill by taking away their giveaways. if you're interested in adopting a dog but live too far away from it, there is often the option of having a dog transported to you/closer to you. Google "dog rescue transportation."

What is the cheapest way to adopt a new born baby?
Q. My husband and I found out middle of 2008 that we can't have babies due to some medical problems. we've thought about adopting but i found out it would cost about $30k to adopt.. any suggestion?

A. I'm sorry that some people are being hostile towards you and calling you "cheap" just because you don't want to give $30K to a business in exchange for a baby! Obviously, foster care can be cheap, but it can take forever. Depending on what state you live in, you could possibly advertise independently to adopt. Find a birth mother yourself then hire an attorney to get the legal part of the adoption done. You can do this for $10K or less if you play your cards right. Consider adopting from a country like Ethiopia where they'll let you adopt twins or triplets for the price of just one adoption (basically, you'd get 2 or 3 kids for $10-15K each) They also have sibling groups. I believe you can also do this in Guatemala and Brazil, but do a… [cont.]
