The Orphan Train was a social experiment that transported children from crowded coastal cities of the United States to the country's Midwest for adoption. The orphan trains ran between 1854 and 1929, relocating an estimated 200,000 orphaned, abandoned, or homeless children. At the time the orphan train movement began, it was estimated that 30,000 vagrant children were living on the streets of New York City.

Two charity institutions, The Children's Aid Society (established by Charles Loring Brace) and The New York Foundling Hospital, determined to help these children. The two institutions developed a program that placed homeless city children into homes throughout the country. The children were transported to their new homes on trains which were eventually labeled “orphan trains.” This period of mass relocation of children in the United States is widely recognized as the beginning of documented foster care in America.

Can You Tell Me Anything About the Orphan Trains?
Q. I'm fascinated to know what went on back in those days
Asked by H****** - Wed Apr 2 19:10:02 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You have gotten a lot of good information, and of course you can google it yourself, so I won't add too much of that. What kind of struck me as strange, though, is that the organization that ran these is still in around and is actually promoting itself with the orphan train connection; they buy advertising from Google to have a sponsor link when anyone searches for orphan train: Now looking at their website they seem to do a lot of good these days, including advocating and providing assistance to low income families, including many programs to help families find assistance and to keep children in their homes and out of foster care. This is great! But the orphan trains? Well, a very mixed bag. They themselves say: "Children s Aid… [cont.]

How do I litter box train this 4-week-old kitten?
Q. I have adopted this orphaned kitten, who had been living outside in the rain in a box. When I got her 5 days ago, she was starving and she didn't even know how to walk because she had never been outside the tiny box. We are now bottle-feeding her, and she is starting to eat out of a dish, and we have gotten rid of her fleas. My question is concerning how to get her to start using a litter box. She spends quite a bit of time under the couch, so I am thinking she might be using my carpet as a toilet. I put her in the litter box all the time. I show her how to use her little paws to dig ("Look how much fun digging is!"), but she just isn't getting the hint so far. In fact, she usually gets litter in her eyes and then I have to hold her… [cont.]

A. Despite some people's ideas that your kitten is "too young" to be litter trained, the problem is not her age, it is that she was orphaned. Kittens learn to use the litter box by watching the mother, just like they learn everything else from her. Watch her after she eats. Usually within just a few minutes she will start "sniffing around." She's looking for a place to go, and once she uses one spot--even if it's under your couch, she will want to go back to that same spot every time. When you see her sniffing around, take her to the litter box. This will take some time and close watching for a few days, but it will be worth it. If you find any place she has already gone, cover it with tin foil. They don't like to step on that. Also,… [cont.]

A. why don't you contact an aids group in france for assistance with the art? getting it into france, i mean. then hold a fundraiser with all the "right" people. i suggest getting some art from the orphans themselves. that sort of thing usually sells well, tugs the heart strings.
