An orphan (from the Greek ὀρφανός) is a child permanently bereaved of his or her parents. In common usage, only a child (or the young of an animal) who has lost both parents is called an orphan.

In certain animal species where the father typically abandons the mother and young at or prior to birth, the young will be called orphans when the mother dies regardless of the condition of the father.

Definitions

Various groups use different definitions to identify orphans. One legal definition used in the USA is a minor bereft through "death or disappearance of, abandonment or desertion by, or separation or loss from, both parents".

In the common use, an orphan does not have any surviving parent to care for him or her. However, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS), and other groups label any child that has lost one parent as an orphan. In this approach, a maternal orphan is a child whose mother has died, a paternal orphan is a child whose father has died, and a double orphan has lost both parents. This contrasts with the older use of half-orphan to describe children that had lost only one parent.

How can I help a 21 year old orphan?
Q. I recently found out that our wonderful babysitter has been an orphan since she was 14 years old. She has been out of the system and supporting herself since she was 18. She has a car, an apartment, and is attending the local community college but she is struggling to make ends meet. Are there any government programs? Are there any foundations? Scholarship programs? etc... My husband and I have offered to take her in but she is an adult and wants to remain independent. Any ideas? Thank you so much!!!

A. Buy her some shopping every now & then (food) that should help her out. Or buy some other things you know she might need. In this way you're giving her gifts rather than supporting her & she retains her independence

How many starving African Orphan lives could be saved with the Iraq War money?
Q. How many starving African, Cambodian, and Indian orphans could have been saved with the money wasted in the war (terriosm) on Iraq? Fair enough Kryptonian, how many condoms could be given to parents? My point is that the money could be better spent elsewhere, whether here in the US on healthcare, education, etc. rather than on a useless war that is only going to create more terrorist anyway.

A. There are two ways: Get a Society registered or Get a Trust registered A society is always more trustworthy than a Trust because Trusts are more personal and not very open to their dealings. Registered societies are in contrast very open to their dealing and procedures. Go to the registration office in your area and ask for the forms and rule book. Alternatively contact a lawyer or a chartered accountant who will get all paper formalities done in minimal charge and will guide you from time to time. Once you open the NGO make sure that you keep up to date records of its day to day activities, finances, taxation and all other things.
